HRM-app first impressions Link to this post

I recently purchased the Ithlete dongle, HRV and HRM apps, and have been trying them out with mixed succes, the HRM app a little more than the HRV but I guess there is a learning curve.

Anyway, the HRM app works well, it does what it promises, and the graphs generated with HR and TRIMP are beautifully conceived and informative. Any remarks I can think of regard the analysis and implementation of the data rather than its acquisition.

Here are some suggestions and remarks:
    - You should be able to generate the graphs of all your stored workouts rather than only your last one. I have tried taking printscreens of the graphs after every workout but since printscreens of horizontally oriented screens (like the graphs) are oriented vertically by the photo app, they are a pain in the a** to view. I guess you could fool around with the rotation lock or use software to rotate the screens 90 degrees, but I think that's stupid...
Do the workouts generate that much data that all of it can't be stored in a device with a minimum of 8Gb storage?
    - The horizontal axis (time) of the graphs could be more detailed. (maybe have an option to have more intervals than 15-minutely)
    - Being able to zoom into the graphs would also be nice.
    - Maybe there could be an analysis of your recovery heart rate to complement the "current fitness level" setting or just as an added feature?

I read that you use Runkeeper and implement your HR data in their site, so I used Runkeeper for my latest workout. To my disappointment, I saw that it only recorded half of my run, so it must have crashed in the middle of my run... I hope this is not a regular occurrence but a view on the Runkeeper forum suggests many users have this problem and they have not fixed the bug although it goes back many months. I will try again tomorrow on my bicycle (I see they have released a new version today with bug-fixes as well) and if all goes well, import the HR data into the site. But I will also be looking for other options, I have downloaded Runtastic Pro for instance to try out. Do you have suggestions?

I will try to come up with more suggestions as I get more familiar! But I have to say it works beautifully, especially given the fact that it's one of the first versions. Flawless!

Re: HRM-app first impressions Link to this post

Ok so I just returned from my mountainbike ride and it went well! (Well, apart from an average HR of 157)

Ithlete HRM recorded my HR beautifully and Runkeeper did well also, apart from tat I cannot see my speed dropping to zero (or below 8km/h) even when i stopped for a minute to drink.

I tried importing the .hrm file Ithlete HRM produced into the Runkeeper activity, but nothing seemed to happen when I selected the file in the edit screen and saved. I guess the file needs some editing since Runkeeper recorded my run as being 1:18:06 while Ithlete HRM recorded for 1:18:11 (It's very difficult to start & stop Runkeeper & Ithlete HRM simultaneously)

How should you edit & import the .hrm file into Runkeeper?

    Thanks!

It's not necessary to start & stop the two at exactly the same time to have RunKeeper display the HR readings.
Sounds like you are doing the right thing - Edit the activity in RK, upload the .hrm file by selecting it from the location you put it from the email, and it should just display when you Save.

One point to watch out for though is how some email programs handle the text file attachment. You can check this by opening the .hrm file in a text editor, it should look like this:

    [Params]
    Interval=15

    [HRData]
    76
    78
    77
    86
    93
    89
    90
    101
    ...

First of all, thanks for your articulate and constructively critical forum post!

Initial thoughts on your suggestions as follows:

    1. Chart stored for every workout should be doable, and has been requested by a couple of other users as well. Will give serious thought how to do this one, perhaps by keeping a separate .hrm file for each workout and displaying them on demand when you select that workout on the Log screen. This would also make all workouts available in iTunes for backup, mass download etc

    2. Perhaps the chart could default to 5min intervals until you have done say one hour, after which it would go to 15min intervals to avoid looking too crowded

    3. Zoom is not yet supported by the charting library, but it would be a great feature when it is...

    4. Would rather not confuse things (& ourselves!) by having more than one recovery / fitness measure, and the research evidence is that HRV is the strongest indicator, so that's what we're using.

    Thanks again!

That is exactely what the file looks like in wordpad...

I can select the "upload" button in the edit activity window and browse to the .hrm file but then pressing save and then save again in the edit activity window just doesn't result in any change...
Maybe you need to be Runkeeper Elite to be able to upload HR-data?

I will try to ask Runkeeper support!

No, you don't need to be RunKeeper Elite, and it has worked fine during testing on 30+ occasions.

Can I ask if anyone else has had problems loading the .hrm file into RK, and if so, whether you are using Windows or MacOS, and which email client (MacMail, Outlook, WebMail etc) you are using?

Hi - only just found this thread (already posted some related questions in another thread).

I use a Mac and can't get the HR data into RunKeeper either. I also have a PC so I will try to download the data from there later today. I'll report back on my findings.

    Great product by the way!

Re: HRM-app first impressions Link to this post

OK - here is an update from today's efforts to upload the HR data from the ithlete file to RunKeeper.

The good news is I've managed to upload some data from the ithlete file to RunKeeper (by the way - RunKeeper Pro is free to download till the end of January) The bad news is - I don't really understand how I did it !!!!!

Let me explain. You select EDIT from the top RH side of the map display and it brings up an edit screen. Then you click on update on the data screen (under the map screen - scroll down if you can't see it). Klick on "Choose File". Find your file and select it. Then click "SAVE" in the "Upload a Heart Rate file" bubble. Then scroll down the page (if you need to) and click "SAVE".

Now, here is the funny part - when I go back to look at the map and scroll along the graph under the map the HR data is not there (on my PC even the graph doesn't show). I know the data has been loaded ok because it automatically updates the AVERAGE HR box but no HR data can be seen. After several attempts to re-load the data with no success I tried to change some other parameters in the edit boxes. Suddenly, for no obvious reason, my HR data appeared and I was able to scroll through the graph!!!! Despite trying this again on several different days worth of data I was unable to consistently reproduce the correct sequence of events to achieve reliable updates - very frustrating!!!!!

HELP please! Does anyone have a fool proof reliable method? What am I missing?
