Week one Link to this post

Just starting out on a journey to better fitness. I've targeted the local 12km "fun run" in Sept as the medium term goal. I did this 2 years ago.
Anyway, the ithlete seemed like a useful tool to help me make decisions about training.
Here is my first full week with ithlete.
Normally, I would do a 5 k run and a a bit of gym work. When the ithlete went amber, I cut down the run and did a lighter session in the gym.
Pretty happy about it's performance to date. It seems to be spot on.
Any help interpreting this chart going forward greatly appreciated.

Today's reading, following on from the chart above was 64, the lowest so far. That was after a day of nothing, feeling pretty flat tbh. And today still pretty tired. So I follow the command of ithlete and do nothing today as well.

I shall update the image above to today's reading and make it a bit smaller I think.

And today it jumped up by 13. So I did my run and workout as per normal. Felt ok.

    Am I doing this right?

    Hi Andy

Thanks for the running commentary - it's good to see the picture emerging!
Looks like your baseline would be 73-75 (the thick blue line) when you are rested. That's a good healthy level, and should trend upwards over time as you get fitter, if your program is working well for you.
I don't know how well the measure is fitting into your daily routine, but I would expect the consistency & sensitivity to improve over the next few weeks, though it sounds like the readings are already corresponding quite well to how you feel.
If you have not already done so, I really recommend downloading the Users Guide www.myithlete.com/download-ithlete-users-guide as it contains bios from other users as well as some good material on healthy training from respected coaches (and it's free!)
Anyone else care to comment on their experiences during the first couple of weeks?

    Hi Andy,

My trend for the first two weeks with the ithlete was down, down, down. Then it mostly recovered over the following weeks.

I don't know why it did that. Could be that I was on a two week learning curve on how to properly take the reading. Or maybe there was an asymptomatic health issue that resolved itself. Or maybe I was dieting.

It happened in May 2010, so I don't remember the details. Here is a screen shot from last September that shows the first months: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19811888/IMG_0018.png

And here is a more recent screen shot that shows a seasonal dip during the December holidays: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19811888/IMG_0028.png

I don't always follow the daily recommendation from the ithlete. But I do think twice before I disregard it. I do keep an eye on the long term trends though.

    Thanks Mark and Simon.(guess)

The screenshots over longer periods are useful. Obviously you can relate it to the training you are doing. Thanks for sharing those.
I'm starting to think that the polar wearlink I have is faulty. I get broken readings during the course of a 30 min run. Polar are pretty hopeless though. Cheaper just to buy a new one I think. But I want to check that it really is broken first.
