    Hi, Does anyone else experience a low score and amber/red on the morning of race day?

    I have been using ithlete now for several months with success. I have however noticed that after taking it easy 2 days previous from race, I experience a dip. I have been ignoring this advice to take it easy and been racing, sometimes recording P.B's!

    I'm thinking there may be a link to pre race nerves which is effecting the ithlete score and would be interested to know if anyone else encounters this phenomenon?

    Hopefully, some other users will comment on their experience, but in the meantime, my experience is that pre race nerves can indeed affect the ithlete score, driving HRV down and HR up.
    You should feel excited about the upcoming challenge for sure, and the combination of normal HRV and raised HR I have so far found to be a very promising one for good performance (ie your body is ready for action and not feeling stressed).
    It may be a simple case that you are not breathing as comfortably as normal, due to butterflies, or tension in the abdomen. In this case, imagining the air coming in and out under your breast bone can help, as can ensuring your lower jaw is not tight, and practising 'belly breathing' is a great relaxation aid!
    I know a US Coach who works with track athletes and professional ballsports teams and he encourages athletes to listen to the White Noise app through sound excluding headphones for a few mins before doing their ithlete reading.

    Hi Sharp,

    I have even seen a red light before a race and still posted a personal best. Sometimes I don't sleep well the night before and I know that my score will be poor. The anticipation might have something to do with it.

    I just did a century ride this past weekend with some friends. It wasn't a race, just a fundraising event. I slept well the night before, but I still registered an amber the morning of the event. You can see the 5 point drop on the graph from this morning's reading.

    Glad I'm not the only one!!

    I wonder if it would be beneficial to miss out doing a reading on race day? Might take away some of the stress worrying about an amber/red alert on an important race you have been training hard for.

    What effect would this have on your rolling (blue line) average?

    Hi Sharp

    Sorry for the late reply. It's a personal preference whether to take a reading on the day of the event, a bit like racing with a heart monitor or power meter. It won't affect the blue line if you miss a reading, but you won't get a Daily Change indication. If you've been using ithlete for a while you can easily judge from the number though, eg if your normal baseline is say 74, and the morning after your event it is 63, you know you have not yet recovered!
