ithlete ECG Receiver

The ithlete ECG receiver is a piece of hardware included in the price you pay at the iTunes app store.

It plugs into the headset jack of your iPhone (located top left) or iPod touch 2nd generation (located bottom right). It picks up the wireless signal from your chest strap (see below), and allows the time gaps between your individual heart beats to be measured very precisely by the ithlete app.

You do not need the ECG receiver to be attached when you review your results & progress in the Chart view or Edit view.

iPhone or iPod touch

ithlete is compatible with all versions of the iPhone* and the iPod touch (second generation or later). 

* Note for 1st gen iPhone users. ithlete will work with 1st gen iPhone, but the headset socket on this model is recessed, will require adaptor eg Exspect iphone audio adaptor

Chest Strap (not included)

The ithlete ECG receiver is compatible with a wide range of analog chest strap models. We figured that the majority of athletes purchasing ithlete would already have one at home, so we did not want to push the cost up by supplying an extra one. 

It is important that the chest strap starts transmitting as soon as you begin the measurement, so it is recommended to moisten the contacts (which are a few inches either side of the center plastic bulge) with a little water, saliva or conductive gel. If the heart pulses erratically during the measurement, poor skin contact is the most likely reason.

The following chest straps have been tested with ithlete:

  • Polar T31, T34, T61
  • Polar T31 coded (incl Wearlink)
  • Nike analog chest transmitter belt
  • Cardiosport analog chest transmitter
  • Sigma Sport non coded
  • Oregon Scientific analog
  • Decathlon Geonaute HRM Chest belt
  • ...  other models? - please let us know so we can add them to the list!

If you don't have a suitable model, we recommend either the Polar Type 31, (not WIND model) or the Suunto Dual Comfort belt, both available from heartratemonitor.co.uk in the UK. Please not that the ithlete receiver is not yet compatible with Garmin ANT+ digital transmitter belts.

ithlete Software App

The app itself is purchased through the iTunes store as usual for any iPhone / iPod touch app. The price includes updates that we make as a result of new research insights or user feedback.
